Comments: The next model up from the AVM7270 to compete with Belkin's "Bob". Also with a built-in ADSL modem, ethernet WAN port for Cable or NBN (LAN port 1 configurable), built-in cordless phone base station with some PBX & answering machine capabilities, FXS ports for other phones, USB port for printer, Hard Drive or 3G*, IPv6 support, 5 year warranty and it can also take up to 6 handsets. (The Fritz! AVMMT-F handset is recommended and has other features you may not get in a standard cordless phone but there are others that will work. Click here for a list of alternate handsets.)

Note: Some Uniden phones and base stations are not compatible with the Fritz. For more information on which models may be problematic try the Fritz forums here (search "Uniden") or the Whirlpool forums here

The main differences to the 7270 model are that this one can do simultaneous dual band wireless, it has gigabit LAN ports and two USB ports.

Also available is the Fritz! AVMWLAN Wireless USB adapter with the Fritz! "Stick and Surf" security system.

    * Click here for compatible 3G modems. Latest firmware supports Sierra 312U.
Another way to share a 3G/4G connection is by tethering a Smartphone. For instructions check out my blog post here.

Note: For FTTH or NBN use ensure latest firmware version is installed.

This is been an outstanding router. Easy to use and powerful. Connects at fast dsl speed (though we are medium distance from exchange). Better than billion 7404 and iinet default. gets 14mbit/s down and 1 mbit/s up. Full features - I have phones and with this was confident enough to drop telstra and move totally to voip. Reliable and fine. Some minor niggles - the internal web fitering could be more tunable (pretty much one enables it or not) - but minor overall. I haven’t found anything that looks comparable and is easy to use (e.g. billion was powerful, but one had to be quite skilled to set it up).

Very unstable wireless performance. Frequently loses connections, which can only be restored by power-cycling the FritzBox.

I purchased this several months ago to replace my Draytek. The unit works well, is stable and offers a large feature set.
The main negative I have is the call number display on a PSTN is erratic although it mainly does not work for me. I have 2 VOIP numbers and my regular Telstra number all working well (but still not optionally set up). The ADSL2 speeds are slightly higher than the Draytek was able to achieve.

Feature set is good, but stability is poor. After-sales support is mediocre.

Unit suffers from intermittent hangs which requires hard reset (ie unplugging the power cable). Whirlpool users suggest cause may be faulty power supply, but no way to confirm this without having a second identical power supply on hand.

Fritzbox support staff try to help but stop responding when their standard list of questions and suggestions (isolation tests etc) have been answered and problem has still not been resolved.

Like the previous reviewer, bought the Fritzbox because of the hype and lived to regret it.

    NOT recommended.

I think this device is actually pretty over-rated.

DSL speed is only so-so (despite all the claims about great DSL performance, check out Whirlpool...it doesn’t perform well over long lines). Not much faster than my $90 Billion 7300 or ancient Netgear 834g.

Frequently won’t connect to DSL where the Netgear and Billions are faultless - needs a full power/unplug cycle.

DHCP is rubbish, again checkout Whirlpool. Doesn’t like using static IPs or reservations, unless you reboot router (see above issue).

WebGUI doesn’t work well with Chrome or Safari.

The irony is that I bought this as it was hyped as the duck’s guts of routers. Now I’m trying to sell it and go back to a Billion or Draytek.

I cannot get DECT handsets registered, despite them supporting DECT-GAP. Again this was a major selling point for me.

The response from AVM’s local support is to try beta firmwares. Seriously?

Have a look at Whirlpool and once you bypass the fanboys you will see there are a lot of outstanding issues and bugs.

Its not a bad router, its just not a brilliant one.

Although functionally similar to the 7270 this unit seems to be less able to deal with ADSL2+ variations. Note it is not designed for use with parallel services such as fax machines, foxtel ondemand, back to base alarms or other phones not directly connected by the fritz. It also suffers from phantom rings for some customers. Please carefully check the forums before purchasing this unit or you may find you need to return it as I have. I also had the 7270 and it did not have the phantom ring issue. Note all this can be found on the fritz Australian forum but is not advertised on the packaging.

Small business using 1 landline & 3 VOIP numbers, Fax to Email, 4 x internal answering machines, Siemens & Panasonic handsets registered directly to Fritzbox, All easy to setup and maintain. Very stable. Now want one for home.
Fritz!box Android app on Galaxy S works great.

I wish I had this years ago. Cuts down on separate devices being a all in one device. Easy to set up including using existing Dect phones registered to Fritzbox. Gives as much information as required for novice or expert. Rings every last kb out of line speed (Bigpond). Highly recommended.
