Comments: An update for the 7404VGO to include support for Annex M connections. Annex M is a variation of ADSL2+ technology which should allow even faster Internet speeds, particularly upload where speeds of up to 2.5 mbits are theoretically possible. More at Whirlpool

The 7404VGPM & 7404VGOM models differ from the cheaper 7401VGPM by having two FXS ports and support from up to 8 SIP registrations at a time. (The 7401VGPM is only capable of one). Wireless and security features are the same for all 3 models.

How to tell the difference between a the 7404VGO and 7404VGOM: Both products are called 7404VGO on the box and on the sticker on the bottom of the modem so at first glance will appear to be identical. However, there's a couple of subtle differences to tell them apart -
    1. On the side of the 7404VGOM box there's a red dot beside the words "over POTS (Annex A + M)" and there's an "Annex M ready" sticker on the top of the box underneath its name.
    2. On the bottom of the modem the serial number will have the letter A in it (eg 96A0706000000) if it's the plain 7404VGO Annex A version, and a letter M in it (eg 96M0806000000) for the 7404VGOM.
Note: The two products may share a name and look much the same but inside they are quite different. You cannot upgrade a 7404VGO to Annex M, but the 7404VGOM is backwards compatible with standard Annex A ADSL lines.

Great features and great price. Support is decent but what stops it from being a real stand out is that the Firewall is too bloody flakey and hard to configure. See the whirlpool.net.au forums about the amount of people trying to get it to work reliably. Most advice seems to be to switch it off but for some thats not an option...

I’ve been using this router ever since I purchased it from OzCableGuy about 8 months ago never had any problems very easy to set up and configure. Also support through billion and on whirlpool.net is excellent. Very configurable and very stable

All the specs are great, but like most other ADSL modems it only has an operating temp of 40 Degrees C, which is useless in Australia. You have a 35 degree C day & then add 15 degrees for no circulation. I had a netcomm V300 that died after twelve months from temp.

Fantastic router, wireless is excellent, solid firewalling VoIP features. Have it working great with iiNet’s VoIP service and a cordless Panasonic phone, and built-in QoS means that phones calls still sound good even when downloading. Haven’t tried having more than one SIP registration at any one time. If you don’t need the VPN endpoints, go the 7404VGPM instead.
