I tried going for the Telstra Elite Home Gateway with inbuilt 3G.

However, after four weeks of not being able to get it activated, I eventually returned it to JB HiFi for a refund.

While Telstra gave several different 'reasons' for the problem, their only 'solution' was to return the box to the shop, and buy one direct over the phone and it would already be activated.

Well, what poor service. Their resellers and even their own shops have been given the shaft on this one.

The real problem seems to be that either the problem is:
- in their backend in how it handles the activation process online, or
- the box needs some hands on stuff done (though it possibly is hidden page adjustments that they are not willing to give out publically).

Either way, people and resellers have been sold a dud device. They can give NO ETA on when these devices can be activated.

Mr Thodey, you have a problem!

With Optus and the NBN introducing higher speeds on the WAN interface how about including the specified WAN speed as well as verified WAN speed.

My current router claims up to 90Mbit/s WAN speed but with current firmware it fails to achieve close to this. On the Optus premium speed trial the router only achieved 41Mb/s while with a direct PC connection it was over 90Mb/s.

Hi Nick,

Netgear don't mention WDS (repeater) function in their specs. However, if you can cable it into your network and run it as an additional WAP per http://www.ozcableguy.com/wireless.asp#1.17 with the same SSID and security options as your other WAP/s you could work it that way.

With normal WDS too, bear in mind that compatibility issues between brands does happen. More info at http://www.ozcableguy.com/wireless.asp#4.10

Hi
I want to use a router like the WNR2000 above as a wireless repeater. Can this router be configured in this way and will it work with other brand Aps ie I have both Billion and Belkin units. Thanks

Sorry, try asking at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/. Open went belly-up late last year and I didn't really get to play much with the products.

Do you have any documentation on the 812L dialplan. How do you connect an incoming PSTN call to VoIP, say with a remote SIP phone?

Thanks.

We lose about half the typical direct PC speed using our NetComm N3G002W with the Telstra Elite, compared to about 20% used with their 7 series.

I deduce from this that these routers do not have enough power to keep up with the faster speeds now available. I don't know how they will handle 42Mbps or 84Mbps.

It was one of the reasons why I tried using the modem in a spare Win7 computer for a while, but even using the Telstra manager, which has auto reconnect, rather than the Bigpond one, reboots after OS updates would often leave the modem offline. Having full modem speed was nice though, as even a quad core on half speed has oodles of reserve.

There is at least one affordable cable router available with IPv6 that should work with Internode's IPv6 test service if combined with a DSL modem in bridging mode. It's the D-Link DIR-825 which Ozcableguy sells for $193.60 The coming Draytek 2130 also supports IPv6. Others shouldn't be far behind and I think it would be good to highlight IPv6 support anyway you can to raise its profile and assist in advancing its adoption.

Thanks Jim. Fixed. :)
When I do the write-ups I go off the spec sheets and web pages for the products rather than delving right into the manuals and while the current web page does indeed mention QoS now, the previous web page didn't. There were a few D-Link routers like this. I thought I got them all but this one slipped through somehow. :(
